Residential Design
Conservation Project
Plas-yn-llan, a half-timbered 16th-century house in the Vale of Clwyd, was, at the time we became involved, in danger of collapse. Apart from general repairs and upgrades for 20thC living to the interior, the main part of the project was to conserve the huge amount of original internal oak structure, to completely re-build the jettied three storied West gable, and to re-construct the whole of the timber framing to the North side of the house which had almost completely rotted away. Many wattle and daub internal walls were replaced exactly as originally constructed - cow manure being collected from the farm across the road! A large grant towards the works, which were carried out almost exactly as the original build, was received from CADW, who supervised the works on a regular basis. Wordsworth stayed twice at the house in the 1790s, and wrote glowingly about it in letters to his sister. |
